Look for the person's profile. If you can see the profile while on the People tab of the search results, the person's profile is still active, meaning that they just unfriended you.

Question arising: Bit dumb question, but since Facebook has many 'see who visited your profile' apps am curious....

If I search for people that aren't on my friend list, can these people ever find out I have been searching for them/visiting their profile?

Answer: There is not any type of apps who tells about who visited our profile.
The apps you're asking about are just fake apps.
I suggest you not to use those apps because when you open these apps and Click "Allow" ..you allow them to get access to your every personal information. Some these type of apps are also being use to hijack facebook accounts.
