Hacker threatens to delete Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook account live on stream

It’s fair to say that 2018 has not been a good year for Facebook, with numerous security concerns coming to light. This has drawn the attention of a Taiwanese “white-hat” hacker who announced on Facebook that he intends to livestream his attempt to hack into Mark Zuckerberg’s page in order to delete the founder’s account.

Chang Chi-yuan is well known in Taiwan for his efforts in the security sector, weeding out bugs and advocating the practice on local television networks. While many of his published claims have yet to be independently verified, according to Bloomberg, he did make the list of eight special contributors in Line Corp.’s bug hunters hall of fame in 2016.

Hacker threatens to delete Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook account live on stream

Now, Chang has turned his attention to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, telling his 26,000 followers that he will attempt to delete the account by 6pm, GMT+8, live on stream, translating to 3am PDT / 6am EDT / 11am BST / 12pm CEST. “Broadcasting the deletion of FB founder Zuck’s account,” said the announcement. Given that Chang has stated his previous intent has been money-driven, it’s entirely possible that this is an attempt to capitalise on Facebook’s bug bounty program.

That being said, it is an unprecedented move to showcase methods in real-time, while garnering an audience. This leans more towards the 23-year-old’s other statement that he hacks simply because he’s “just bored.”

Zuckerberg is no stranger to being hacked, however, after the founder’s account was successfully breached in 2011. The end result saw the attacker posting a status update from the account instead of outright deletion as Chang threatens. Whether this will be successful or not, however, remains to be seen.

KitGuru Says: I can’t speak for Chang’s intentions, but this seems more aimed at fame and glory than the self-proclaimed “white-hat” status. Still, it could result in a much-needed bolster to security efforts, which is exactly what white-hat stands for. Will you be tuning?

Hacker backpedals on his brazen threat to delete Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook account

Can this hacker really delete Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook account?

A Taiwanese bug bounty-hunter claimed this week that he would delete Mark Zuckerberg's personal Facebook account and promised to stream the attack live on Facebook.

Now, in an unexpected twist, he’s backpedaling on his promise to livestream the deletion of Zuckerberg's account — but not on the claim that he found a severe vulnerability within Facebook.

The scandal first broke when Bloomberg reported on a scheduled Facebook Event created by the 23-year-old Taiwanese hacker Chang Chi-yuan in which the hacker described "live-streaming the deletion of [Facebook] founder Zuck's account."

But in the ensuing hours since the story was picked up by Bloomberg and other major news outlets, Chang wrote another long, somewhat rambling Facebook post backpedaling on his promise to publicly demonstrate that he could, in fact, delete Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook account.

In the new post, Chang said he didn’t expect for his event, which was sent to more than 27,000 people, to go viral. He said the event was really only meant for people in Taiwan. However, he reaffirmed that he did discover a method that would have a allowed him to delete Zuckerberg's account. He posted screenshots of his bug submission to Facebook.

Chang Chi-yuan’s claims were originally met with intrigue, especially since he’s not just some random person boasting on the internet with nothing to back it up. At 23 years old, Chang Chi-yuan has developed a name for himself within hacking communities as a bug bounty-hunter, or in other words someone who finds bugs in software and services, and responsibly discloses them to the company that owns them. In return, the companies usually provides some sort of monetary reward with variables dependent on each company.

Chang has been a guest on local television talk shows to discuss his hacking claims. He has been sued by a local bus operator for hacking their systems to purchase a ticket for 3 cents. The makers of the messaging app Line have named Chang Chi-yuan in their hall of fame for its 2016 Line Security Bug Bounty Program and listed him as a “special contributor” on their website.

Even Facebook itself has listed Chang Chi-yuan’s name on its white hat thank you page, claiming “on behalf of over a billion users, we would like to thank the following people for making a responsible disclosure to us” before going on to name Chang on its 2016 "thank you" list.

Mashable has reached out to Facebook regarding Chang Chi-yuan’s exploit claims, and we’ll update this post when we hear back.

Hacker who vowed to delete Zuckerberg's Facebook account over livestream wisely reconsiders

Why it matters: Chang Chi-yuan was preparing to publicly attempt to take down Zuckerberg's Facebook account but as the story gained global attention, it seems as though the white-hat hacker wisely reconsidered. Pulling off such a feat would probably have resulted in some serious legal repercussions.

Hacker who vowed to delete Zuckerberg's Facebook account over livestream wisely reconsiders

A Taiwanese white-hat hacker named Chang Chi-yuan will make an attempt to delete the Facebook account of founder Mark Zuckerberg this weekend and promises to livestream the whole thing.

Bug bounty hunters like Chi-yuan typically do their work behind the scenes, disclosing vulnerabilities to companies privately and securely in exchange for a cash reward. Rarely do they attract attention like this, much less livestream their antics and alert potential targets beforehand.

Chi-yuan is described by Bloomberg as a minor celebrity among locals. Previous efforts have earned him spots on talk shows to discuss his findings and generated various news reports. He was featured in Line’s 2016 hall of fame list as a special contributor.

According to Chi-yuan’s Facebook post, the live attempt to take down Zuckerberg’s account will start at 6:00 p.m. local time which works out to 6:00 a.m. Eastern time this Sunday, September 30.

Update: As this story was unfolding and making headlines around the globe, Chi-yuan posted a follow-up message on Facebook. The translation is rough but it sounds as if he is calling off the whole thing. We’ve republished the translated statement below:

I think long
Even if I find more loopholes, get more bonus.
Still a lot of people question my ability
I shouldn't really take zcuk's account number this time to experiment and prove strength
Result I haven't done it now
There's news in the country first.
Now there's news in the country too.
That live trailer was originally wanted to make people in Taiwan
I didn't think I'd let the abroad notice it first.
Now I have two results
One is really done
Was said I was fake
Or too high-profile thinking red
The other one is I didn't do it
Still being said I'm fake
Or too high-profile thinking red
Anyway the result is no one will believe
Then to avoid unnecessary trouble
I don't live or delete account number
Otherwise, there's no bonus to take it.
Because after I finished the live wen
The official responded to my loophole.
Sorry to have you guys too much
I cut your umbilical cord
But this is something you guys watch
I'm a bad guy.
Zuck innocent victim thing
You guys just believe in other than Zucc'd
One has $ 7'D presence is ok
I should be glad I'm not really crazy.
No really delete
Just as this whole thing is my mouth
If just someone fb was boarded
Then just get boarded
No worries

Hackers 'Will Delete Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Account On Sunday'

Mark Zuckerberg is about to be thrust into the spotlight again as hackers threaten to delete the Facebook founder’s own social media account and stream it live to the world.

According to Bloomberg, Zuck will be stripped of his Facebook profile on Sunday (30 September) and humiliated in front of millions.

Hackers 'Will Delete Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Account On Sunday'

Writing in a Facebook post, Taiwanese Chang Chi-yuan promised to go full Anonymous and delete Zuckerberg’s account. According to the site, Chi-yuan is a well-known hacker in the world of the web.

If anyone was doubting Chang’s skills, he was previously sued by a local bus company for hacking its system and buying tickets for just a fraction of the RRP. He’s also reported to have tackled the likes of Apple and Tesla, but wants to take it to the next level and take on the corporate face of Facebook.

White-hat hackers are apparently all the rage in Taiwan, and Chi-yuan has previously posted about how you can earn a living from exposing flaws in the system. Chi-yuan’s Facebook account was also listed as a “special contributors” in Line Corp.’s acclaimed 2016 bug-hunters’ hall of fame.

He is apparently a minor celebrity in the country and has even appeared on talk shows. He’s thought to be around 24 (based on past interviews) and looks set to topple Zuckerberg’s empire from beneath the 34-year-old.

Chang Chi-yuan is a self-confessed bug bounty-hunter, and even if Facebook steps up its security around Zuckerberg’s account — which it definitely will — we shouldn’t take this threat lightly.

It hasn’t been a good year for the Facebook CEO after he got well and truly spanked by the US Senate for Facebook’s shady dealings. Just when it looks like things couldn’t get any worse, having your own account from your own site disappear before your eyes is even more of a kick in the nuts.

Looks like it ‘Zucks’ to be Zuckerberg right now, but rest assured, we’ll all be tuning in on Sunday.

This hacker is going to delete Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page and also livestream it

This hacker is going to delete Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page and also livestream it

White-hat hacker, Chang Chi-yuan says he will hack into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook account going so far as to delete it altogether, on September 30. If that wasn't enough, the self-proclaimed bug bounty hunter will do it all on livestream, which means his 26,000-plus followers (and the rest of the world) on the social media platform will be able to witness the hacking in real-time.

This hacker is going to delete Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page and also livestream it

Bug-bounty programs are common among technology companies. Even Facebook has one. These bug-bounty programs reward hackers who are able to detect flaws in the system so these companies can then fix them. But usually, hackers tend to look for bugs inside systems, under the cover. It is only when they get rewarded that we get to learn about loopholes in a tech company's systems. Chang Chi-yuan's seemingly open dare to hack into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook account may be the first case wherein a hacker would be carrying out, or at least trying to carry out the hack in front of a live audience. Whether or not he will be able to go through with it, is something only time will tell.

But going by Chang Chi-yuan's track record, he might just be able to pull off the stunt. A Bloomberg report says, Chang Chi-yuan is a minor celebrity in Taiwan who has successfully hacked into Apple and Tesla. He was apparently sued by a local bus operator after he hacked their systems and bought a ticket for just NT$1 (3 cents). Chang Chi-yuan has appeared on talk shows and is also listed on Japanese messaging service Line's 2016 bug-hunters' hall of fame.

To top that, Chang Chi-yuan says he doesn't even want to be hacker and only does it when he is bored and wants to earn some money.

As for hacking into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook account, this won't be the first time someone would do it, should Chang Chi-yuan actually be able to do it. Also, it is not certain if he would be able to make some money out of it. Facebook has previously refused to reward Khalil Shreateh for hacking into Zuckerberg's account and posting a video of Enrique Iglesias on the wall of one of his college friends.

Hacker challenges Facebook by claiming he will delete Zuckerberg's account on Sunday [Update]

Hacker challenges Facebook by claiming he will delete Zuckerberg's account on Sunday [Update] - In a boisterous turn of events, a Taiwanese hacker by the name of Chang Chi-yuan is challenging Facebook's security credentials by claiming he will delete the company's founder's account this coming Sunday.

Hacker challenges Facebook by claiming he will delete Zuckerberg's account on Sunday [Update]

Chang also claims to have successfully attacked Apple and Tesla. While none of these attacks have been independently corroborated, the self-proclaimed white hat hacker was also recently sued for hacking into a local bus operator's systems and has been featured on a list of special contributors for Line's bug bounty hall of fame in 2016.

Adding a great deal of irony to the mix, Chang made his challenge using Facebook itself, relaying his claims to 26,000 followers, and is planning on broadcasting the spectacle to the world on Facebook Live.

Zuckerberg's account was hacked back in 2013 in a similar episode when a security researcher, Khalil Shareath, broke into the Facebook CEO's account to make a post and prove a point. Unfortunately, despite Facebook's maintaining a bug bounty program that pays researchers for discovering these kinds of exploits, the company did not pay Shareath. Instead, a crowdfunding campaign had to raise money to make sure the researcher got his dues.

Chang, too, has talked about using his nascent hacking career as a way to make some money, but may face a similar fate as Shareath. If you'd like to join in and see whether Chang can live up to his claims before Facebook finds a way to stop him, he'll be broadcasting live on Sunday at 6 PM Taiwanese time.

Update: As his challenge gained international fame, Chang seems to have gotten cold feet and posted a new message on Facebook, which suggests that he has decided to no longer proceed with his planned deletion of Zuckerberg's account.

He has also attached a few pictures to his post as a means of proving his exploit was indeed real. They show someone from Facebook acknowledging a report submitted by him. There's also a picture of him among the list of White Hat hackers thanked by Facebook. However, the devil is in the details as the pictures do not have a timestamp, and a quick glance at the list of people thanked by Facebook shows his name is nowhere to be found on either the 2018 or the 2017 list. He's only included on the list from 2016 (in the same position as the image uploaded by him), and this may suggest that he was using an older credit from Face

Facebook says 50 million accounts hacked, 90 million users need to reset their passwords

 Facebook Password     1 comment

Facebook says 50 million accounts hacked, 90 million users need to reset their passwords - Facebook has announced that it has discovered a major security flaw in the way its accounts work, and that has potentially affected as many as 50 million users. The company said that it was also notifying nearly 90 million users who would be required to log into their Facebook account and reset the password.

"On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 25, our engineering team discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts. We're taking this incredibly seriously," Guy Rosen, Facebook VP of product management wrote on the company blog.

The security flaw apparently is so grave that it allows a potential hacker to take control of a Facebook account. It works through a Facebook feature called View As that lets Facebook users see how their profile looks to public and their friends. But apparently this feature exposes the security token associated with the Facebook profile and session and that lets a crafty hacker or anyone with sufficient tech knowledge to take control of someone's Facebook account. Facebook also said that while it has fixed the problem and while it reviews the View As feature, it is disabling the View As option for all accounts.

The social media site has also said that it is notifying around 90 million users whose Facebook accounts it believes are at the risk of falling prey to hackers due to the View As bug. These users will have to log into their Facebook account and change their passwords immediately.

So how do you know that your account is among the affected accounts? Apparently, you will be forced logged out of Facebook. This is going to happen for around 90 million users. Suddenly if you find yourself logged out of the Facebook app or from the Facebook website, it is possible that your account was exposed to hackers due to the View As bug.

Facebook has explained how the security breach allows someone to exploit Facebook accounts. "Our investigation is still in its early stages. But it's clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code that impacted View As a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people's accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don't need to re-enter their password every time they use the app," wrote Rosen.

Facebook says that it has taken three steps to fix the issue. One, the View As bug has been rectified and fixed. Second, it has reset passwords for 90 million users - 50 million directly affected and 40 million at risk - and third it has notified law enforcement agencies.

The news of the Facebook accounts breach comes a day after a hacker in Taiwan said that he would delete the account of Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook on Sunday and that he would live stream the whole process. It is not clear if the hacker was - or is - going to use the same bug that Facebook discovered on September 25 to attack Zuckerberg's account or if he would use some other trick.

Facebook log in data breach: Should you delete your Facebook account after hack?

 Login Breach     1 comment

MILLIONS of Facebook users across the world have been caught up in a major data breach. But should you delete your Facebook account after the hack?

Facebook discover 'security breach' affecting 50 million accounts

Around 90million Facebook users were logged out of their accounts today.

The social media site has revealed hackers managed to take over 50 million Facebook user accounts earlier this week.

The attackers are believed to have exploited a "vulnerability" in Facebook’s code.

This affected “View As”, a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else.

Hackers were then able to steal Facebook access tokens so they could then take over people’s accounts.

Should you delete your Facebook account after hack?

Guy Rosen, Facebook’s VP or Product Management, said in an online post that the vulnerability has been fixed.

Users should hold fire before making the permanent decision to delete their accounts, as Rosen added that any more affected accounts were found, Facebook will immediately reset their access tokens.

He wrote: “On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 25, our engineering team discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts.

“We’re taking this incredibly seriously and wanted to let everyone know what’s happened and the immediate action we’ve taken to protect people’s security.

Facebook log in data breach: Should you delete your facebook account?

“Our investigation is still in its early stages.

“But it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As”, a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else.

“This allowed them to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts.

“Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app.”

Rosen added: “This attack exploited the complex interaction of multiple issues in our code. It stemmed from a change we made to our video uploading feature in July 2017, which

impacted “View As.”

“The attackers not only needed to find this vulnerability and use it to get an access token, they then had to pivot from that account to others to steal more tokens.

“Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed.

“We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based. We’re working hard to better understand these details — and we will update this post when we have more

information, or if the facts change. In addition, if we find more affected accounts, we will immediately reset their access tokens.”

Hacker says he will DELETE Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook account

 Delete     1 comment

Zuckerberg's Facebook account is being targeted by a hacker who claims he will delete it this Sunday

A hacker has claimed that he will delete the Facebook account of Mark Zuckerberg on Sunday.

Posting on, ironically enough, Facebook , Chang Chi-yuan said he will delete Zuckerberg's account live. It's not clear if he'll show the process, or even if he can actually delete anything at all.

Described as a "white hat hacker" he usually earns money from reporting bugs to companies.

A white hat hacker usually doesn't seek to do harm, instead they uncover problems with code and report those issues to whoever wrote it.

Chang Chi-yuan made the claim on his Facebook page

Usually people working in this way wouldn't tell anyone else until the company had a chance to fix the problem. Even hackers not expecting a financial reward would honour this, hence the name "white hat".

It's quite common for big tech firms to have "bug bounties" where experts will inspect applications or websites looking for things that could be exploited.

Many firms will pay for this information as it helps them avoid a real attack and provides valuable insight.

Facebook pays a minimum of $500 for bug reports from white hat hackers

Some hackers will earn tens of thousands reporting these vulnerabilities. Some may even earn as much as $350,000 per year for their efforts.

Tesla pays between $100 and $10,000 for information on an exploit while Google's top payout is $31,337. Amounts depend on the severity of the bug and what it would allow a malicious user to do.

WATCH: WhatsApp flaw allows hackers to to intercept and CHANGE messages sent in group chats

Deleting Facebook accounts would almost certainly qualify as severe. On its own bug bounty page Facebook pays a minimum of $500 for information on such discoveries.

Companies like HackerOne offer the services of coders to big firms so that they can test apps and services before releasing them for public use.

Chang's attempt will be live streamed on Facebook and is scheduled for 11am Sunday September 30. Unless Facebook shuts him down, that is.

How to Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages

Delete, Facebook, how, Messages, Messenger, Retrieve     1 comment

How to Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages: Unfortunately, there is no way to retrieve a Facebook message or conversation that you've already deleted—once you choose to delete a message, it's gone from your side of the conversation for good. While retrieving your data via Facebook isn't an option.

How to Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages

1. Understand the difference between messages and conversations. "Messages" are specific lines of text (or photos, videos, links, etc.) inside of a conversation between you and at least one other person, while "conversations" are entire records of messages between you and your recipient(s).

SEE MORE: How to reactivate an instagram account

If you think you've deleted specific messages from a conversation, finding them may prove time-consuming. Looking for conversations which you think you deleted is much easier.

2. Open Facebook Messenger. Go to https://www.facebook.com/messages in your computer's web browser. This will open your most recent Facebook message in Messenger if you're logged into Facebook.

If you aren't logged into Facebook, you'll be prompted to enter your Facebook email address and password before proceeding.

3. Make sure you actually deleted the conversation. Before you embark on a mission to find (or mourn) your lost messages, scroll through your Facebook Messenger inbox and look for the conversation which you think you deleted. There's always a chance that your conversation just got buried under several newer ones.

4. Check your archived conversations. There's always a chance that you archived the conversation you're looking for rather than deleted it. To check for archived conversations, do the following:

Click the gear-shaped icon in the top-left corner of Messenger.

Click Archived Threads in the drop-down menu.

Review any archived conversations.

You cannot archive individual messages.

READ MORE: Login or sign in to facebook

5. Determine whether your conversations were sent to your email. If you have all email notifications enabled for your account, you should receive copies of messages in your inbox. You can check on this by doing the following:

Click the "Menu"

icon in the top-right side of the Facebook page.

Click Settings in the drop-down menu.

Click the Notifications tab.

Click Email to expand it.

Look to see if the "All notifications, except the ones you unsubscribe from" box in the "WHAT YOU'LL RECEIVE" section is checked. If it isn't, your messages weren't backed up to your email address.

6. Check your email's "Trash" folder. If your conversations were backed up to your email address but you can't find them, try clicking the Trash folder and browsing for them there.

Most email providers delete emails after a certain amount of time (e.g., 30 days), so your messages still may be gone.
