How To Investigate How They See Your Stuff: In our previous article, we put you through how you
can view your profile as others see it from their Facebook account. If you
missed that post click on this link How to view your Facebook Profile As Someone Else to see just how easy it is.
Once you have viewed your profile as others see it,
what else would you like to do with your discovery? Is it to just see how
beautiful your timeline is? Or to just scroll through your Profile pictures,
well there are other things you may consider doing and that is what we will
discuss in today’s post.
Check out how people view your stuff
Listed below are the various ways you can view your
Facebook profile as others see it
Start by viewing your profile as
Public: Pay close attention to this because
this defines how Facebook users especially non-friends see your profile. This
is where you want to be sure they are seeing the “right” things they ought to
without seeing too much. When you post to public, it means everyone, and you
cannot suppress the post from being seen by any trouble maker. However, if you are a marketer, be sure
that the restrictions still conveys your brand, how to reach you, etc.
Consider friends of friends: These people are indirectly important because you cannot
directly control who they are… yet they are not exactly the public at large.
Friends of Friends is the first level where you can use Custom Privacy to keep group
of people or at a person from seeing an item. Unfortunately, the “View As”
tool cannot show you this view. However, keep it in mind.
Check an Individual to check the
“Friends” filter: This only takes a couple moments to
be sure. So regardless of whether or not you use this often, you still want to
take a look and make sure it’s contained. If you post regularly to the Friends
filter, pay attention that the right posts are there… and that none of them are
leaking to the Public or friends of friends without your knowledge. To do this,
just select the name of a friend preferably one that is NOT in a list that you
publish sensitive content to, so that you can have a look at what they see.
Check an Individual to check on the
“Restricted” List: If you use the restricted list
feature on Facebook, to prevent a friend from seeing any non-public postings… then
you will want to view one of those “friends” and be sure that they are only
seeing public content rather than seeing content labeled for friends.
Ultimately, know Your Settings!
Many people are familiar with the
privacy options and what they do but don’t take great advantage of them. This
is your only chance to clean up, shift around, and make better use of them
going forward.
Have you checked your privacy
settings recently? You never know the applications that have permission on your
account, many apps give themselves permission to post at one privacy level and
you might want to change that…. you need to go into App settings, into each of
the apps to change how it posts by default or delete it.
